Day Of The Tentacle Remastered Introduction:

Day of the Tentacle, alternatively known as Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle, is a graphic adventure game created and published by LucasArts in 1993. It serves as the sequel to the 1987 game Maniac Mansion. The game's storyline revolves around Bernard Bernoulli and his companions, Hoagie and Laverne, who embark on a mission to thwart the sinister Purple Tentacle—a sentient, disembodied appendage—from world domination. Players assume control of this trio, tackling puzzles while utilizing time travel to explore various historical periods.

Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer co-directed the game's development, marking their first experience in such leadership roles. They retained certain elements from Maniac Mansion while simplifying the character selection aspect. Inspirations for the game included Chuck Jones' cartoons and American history. Notably, Day of the Tentacle was the eighth LucasArts title to utilize the SCUMM engine.

Gameplay:

Upon release, the game received critical acclaim and achieved commercial success, launching on both floppy disk and CD-ROM formats. Critics praised its cartoon-style visuals and comedic elements. Even years after its initial release, Day of the Tentacle consistently ranks in "top" games lists and continues to be referenced in popular culture. A remastered version of the game, developed by Tim Schafer's studio, Double Fine Productions, was released in March 2016 for Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita, with an Xbox One release in October 2020.

Day of the Tentacle adheres to the point-and-click, two-dimensional adventure game format established by the original Maniac Mansion. Players guide the controllable characters through the game world by using the computer mouse. To interact with the environment, players select from a set of nine commands displayed on the screen (such as "pick up," "use," or "talk to") and then click on an object within the game world. Notably, this was the last SCUMM game to employ the original interface with a verb selection and inventory at the bottom of the screen. Subsequent SCUMM engine games, starting with Sam & Max Hit the Road, adopted a more streamlined approach, allowing players to scroll through a concise list of verbs with the right mouse button and access the inventory on a separate screen.

Time travel plays a significant role in Day of the Tentacle. Early in the game, the three main characters find themselves separated across different time periods due to a malfunctioning time machine. As players complete specific puzzles, they gain the ability to switch freely between these characters, each interacting with the game's world in their respective time periods. Certain small inventory items can be shared by placing them in "Chron-o-Johns," portable toilets modified to transport objects instantly between time periods. Other items are shared by leaving them in the past, allowing characters in future time periods to retrieve them. Changes made in one time period have repercussions in others, and many of the game's puzzles involve the effects of time travel, the aging of items, and alterations to the time continuum. For example, one puzzle requires the player, while in a future era where Purple Tentacle has succeeded, to send a medical chart back in time, where it becomes the design for the American flag. Later, the player collects one such flag in the future to use as a disguise for a character, enabling them to move freely.

Final Words:

An interesting feature is that players can play the entire original Maniac Mansion game on a computer that resembles a Commodore 64 within the Day of the Tentacle game. While this practice has since been adopted by other game developers, it was groundbreaking at the time of Day of the Tentacle's release.
