How to Survive (The latest version) [2023]
How to Survive Introduction:
"How to Survive is a top-down perspective game with two modes: story and challenge, both playable by up to two players. In challenge mode, players start on one side of an island and must reach the opposite end where their getaway vehicle is waiting. Their mission is to collect materials, craft weapons, and escape the island without dying. There are no time constraints in either mode, allowing players to take their time.
Players assume the roles of three survivors: the versatile Kenji, the agile Abbie, and the brawny Jack. These survivors are stranded on one of four zombie-infested islands forming an archipelago. They encounter Andrew, a wounded survivor, and meet Ramon, an elderly one-legged man who owns a boat for inter-island travel. Together, they devise a plan to escape using a beached seaplane with Andrew as the pilot. Ramon sends the survivor to gather materials for plane repairs.
Gameplay:
During the survivor's journey, they encounter Kovac, a mysterious armored figure who considers the islands his personal hunting ground. Kovac, an experienced survivor, mentors the player, providing advice and tools throughout the game.
While searching, the survivor meets Carol, who is searching for her daughter, Emily. Emily is eventually found but falls into the sea, devastating Carol. After repairing the plane, it becomes clear that Andrew cannot pilot it due to his condition, prompting the survivor to seek an alternative.
The survivor encounters Martha, a senile old woman missing her companion, Enzo (who turns out to be a cat). After finding Enzo, Martha mentions a former airplane pilot named Sanchez nearby. Sanchez, a drug smuggler who lost his cargo in a crash, agrees to cooperate if the survivor collects his scattered packages from the archipelago.
During the survivor's quest, they rescue Emily, who had been imprisoned. Her account, along with Carol's accusation of Kovac's involvement in guiding their ship to the reefs, reveals Kovac's true intentions.
The survivor gathers Sanchez, Carol, and Emily at the repaired seaplane, but they decide to retrieve Ramon as well. However, Kovac intercepts the survivor, revealing his sinister plan. He sets up a final test, attracting a massive zombie horde that must be defeated while starting the plane. After a grueling battle, the survivor escapes to the plane, leaving Kovac behind.
Final Words:
The game concludes with Kovac causing another shipwreck by misleading a ship over the radio, just as he did initially. He contacts an accomplice, indicating that a "new shipment of recruits" has arrived. The accomplice is revealed to be Ramon.
"How to Survive" and its "Storm Warning Edition" received mixed to average reviews on all platforms, with the latter being slightly better received according to Metacritic. In Japan, the game was released on various consoles, receiving a score of 31 out of 40 for the PlayStation 4 version in Famitsu."
